Meet Kirsten

Progressive • Activist • Mom

I'm Kirsten Harris-Talley. I’m a mother, educator, wife, and neighbor here in the 37th Legislative District. And I’m running to be your new State Representative.

I’ve lived in our community for over 20 years, and it was here in the Rainier Valley where I found my voice for activism. My husband Jason and I bought our home in Hillman City in 2004 because there is no place we’d rather live. We wanted to build our lives where people lived with a sense of authenticity and purpose, and where we all work together and support each other. It’s for these reasons and so many more that we are proud to call the Rainier Valley home.

Harris-Talley and family

I have spent over 20 years in our region and statewide building powerful movements for change. From philanthropy, to nonprofit work, reproductive rights, and housing justice. The more I work in our community, the more I see our basic needs not being met. I know our District cannot wait for someone to lead on the things we need like stable housing, equitable education funding, and good jobs.

I’m running for State Rep because our neighbors ask me to. It’s time for meaningful leadership for our District. I will stand up for the things we need in Olympia.

The 37th Legislative District stretches from the Central District, Chinatown/International District, into the Rainier Valley, Beacon Hill, Skyway, and into Renton. I know that serving in public office is at its core people-service work, and there are a lot of folks in our communities who are not currently being serviced. You cannot be in a position where you’re representing the people and not actually be with the people. That's why I'm the only candidate running for State Representative not taking corporate money.

Every resident of the 37th Legislative District deserves to have access to the things they need. This means meaningful representation on the state level to ensure:

  • sustainable housing

  • renter protections

  • clean air, water, and soil

  • frequent, accessible, and affordable public transportation infrastructure

  • thriving community and civic centers

  • an equitable economy that invests in small businesses - not just multinational corporations

  • well-funded schools that retain well-paid teachers and reflect the diversity of our communities

  • an end to over-policing

  • access to grocery stores and sustainable foods

We are running this campaign for the State House to build an office and team where the community feels they have access to what they need and their voices are heard. I am running to build community power and bring policies forward that will solve the biggest issues in our district.

Washington State is by many measures a wealthy state with a lot of resources. But there is abundance for some, and not for others. It’s time we work together to change that and ensure that everyone is healthy and cared for. The way we do that is by organizing together and listening to those most impacted by our economic forces. I’m not afraid to lead with courage and humility, and try things in new ways.

We can build a Washington State where everyone gets their needs met, and people can experience genuine freedom. The freedom to take care of themselves and their families while not panicking about one late bill or a rent increase the next month. Washington State can be a place where when people hit a hard time there’s a safety net to catch them and outstretched hands to help them back up.

In the coming months, you are also invited to our Community Vision Sessions. These sessions are free and open to the public in which all members of our community are welcome to attend. You will have the opportunity to speak with me directly about what your ideas for our District are, what work you’re already doing, and what we need to fight for in Olympia. Please join the email list and stay up to date on our social media to learn about when the next Community Vision Session will be held.

I am so excited for our future. Thank you for joining us!
